In fact, at age 11, Kelly joined the Children’s Dance Ensemble, traveling with the modern dance company for six years around the globe. Over the years, Kelly’s mastered a variety of dances and is presently considered one of the leading balboa dancers in the world. Her partner, the amazing Mickey Fortanasce, is a New York City resident with a passion for the peculiar (superherodom included). Mickey’s love of dance expanded in 1999 to included lindy hop and balboa.

Since 2005, Kelly and Mickey have taught, competed, and traveled the world. Together they hold various titles including two-time international Balboa Champions and 2007 American Classic Balboa Champions. They have taught in the US, Canada, Germany, France, London and Scotland. They’ll be joining us at the green door for two spectacular days of balboa focused instruction. Don’t know any balboa yet? Have no fear! Mickey and Kelly will mold and teach you, so you’ll be bal-swinging the night away.

Classes schedule as follows:

Saturday, September 13, 2008

Beyond the absolute basic, balboa has a lot of texture you can add to make the simple seem extraordinary.  Kelly and Mickey will show you how to really spice up your pure bal.

1:30pm Bal Swing, Out and In Class
Once you’ve got a handle on pure bal, you’ll want to explore the cross over bal-swing – allowing you to open up your dance to include releases and spatial movement.  Kelly and Mickey will help you manage the literal “ins and outs” of bal-swing.

2:45pm Bal Swing, More Play Time
Beyond the initial in-out movement associated with Bal Swing, there are a variety of movements that will create a “swing out” feel.  This class will expand on that in-out vocabulary.

4pm Fun with Lollies
One of the most elegant elements of the bal swing dance, Lollie kicks can add a tremendous amount of dynamic to your dance.  Kelly and Mickey will explore Lollie technique and variety.

Saturday, June 28th from 11am through 4:30pm

Location

Cost

$15 per class or $45 for all 4 classes

Instructor

Greg Avakian and Laurie Zimmerman

Greg Avakian has been teaching swing since 1992. He and his partner, Laurie Zimmerman have been dancing together for over 8 years. They specialize in Lindy Hop, West Coast Swing, and Blues Dancing. They have taught around the US and Canada and at many dance camps including: Swing Out New Hampshire, Beantown, and Montreal International Swing Dance Festival. Philadelphia residents, Greg and Laurie make their way to central PA to share their knowledge of lindy hop and its close cousin, west coast swing. Learn the fundamentals, the differences, and how you can add some serious funkiness to your dance repertoire.

WORKSHOP SCHEDULE:
11am Westie Blues: Mix your swing with Blues!
How can we use swing to create contrast with our blues dancing while still maintaining flow and the core of our blues dancing?  West Coast Swing is a very open dance that adds electricity to your movement without taking away the continuity of your blues dancing.  Traditional West Coast Swing is a blues-based dance done to slower tempo music than Lindy Hop – but with very similar footwork patterning.  We’ll use West Coast Swing to explore open movement ideas in blues dancing.

12:30pm Moody Blues: Temper your dance!
Blues is an expressive music that comes in many shades, but it is almost always emotionally charged.  Beyond the ‘sexy/sultry’ stereotypes are a variety of moods; goofy, bold, sassy, arrogant, laid back, campy, homey, playful …and sexy and sultry too.  You’ll learn about projection, expressivity and sharing a laugh with your partner.

2pm Mathematics of Syncopation:  Footwork fun!
We’ll break down exactly what syncopations are, create a list of elements that can be used for any pattern and show the “whys or wheres” of how syncopations work and where to put them into your dancing.  This is a really fun class that will open eyes.  Want more footwork, style and rhythm?  This is the class for you.

3:30pm Blue Swing: Patterns galore!
Expand your vocabulary to add some sweet slower swing moves with this 6 and 8 count variations class.  Build up your groovy blues knowledge all day – but use this class to add to your library of moves.  Also – expect some excellent footwork styling for follows.  Greg and Laurie will throw in a little something for everyone.

7:30pm Dancing at The Green Door Admission is FREE for all workshop package purchasers

Location

Cost

$20 each or $75 for the workshop package (includes all 6 classes).

Instructor

Ben and Sheri Yau

Ben and Sheri Yau are world-class instructors from California. They rarely make it to the east coast to teach, but they'll be at The Green Door for two full days—March 8th and 9th.
Saturday, March 8th, 2008

11am Permutations in Lindy Hop:

Learn Ben’s favorite technique to string together infinite patterns. Double and triple your moves in one class! Basically this is a technique (a very mechanical one!) that Ben uses for stringing together different patterns. It came to him because of a very bad (but funny!) math joke which he loves telling (but Sheri has forbidden since no one seems to laugh). Students will learn to split the Lindy Basic into two parts (1-4 and 5-8). Once you’ve broken it up, Ben and Sheri will teach you different things to do on 1-4 and 5-8 that will fit together like interlocking puzzle pieces.

12:15pm Hardcore Lindy Fundamentals:

Put your basic under a microscope so you can really work on good technique. Ben and Sheri will focus on two or three techniques to strengthen your basic. Students will work through music to utilize these techniques and put them into action.

1:15pm Lunch Break
2:30pm The Armpit Move:

It sounds funny, but this is an awesome series of moves which start from the same lead and have multiple endings. Students in this class will learn a lot of great patterns AND how to lead/follow them properly (QUIZ INCLUDED!) Even if you don’t do it exactly “right,” you can come up with some great personal variations - for the followers, this will be like a great ride at Disney!

3:45pm Unleash Your Musicality:

Bring out the inner YOU into your dancing. And if you have problems finding that inner YOU, we’ll force feed you a few recipes to help. Ben and Sheri do a great job getting dancers to come out of their shells to express themselves in their dancing. They’ll give you some ideas for dancing to various song styles. From there they’ll provide a few example moves to tie everything up nicely.

Sunday, March 9th, 2008
10:30am Shazaam! Slips and Slides!:

In this class, students will learn some moves that work well with slide variations. Ben and Sheri will help you learn to slide gracefully (i.e. without falling) to really mark a moment in the music. This class is sure to add some flare and excitement to your dance vocabulary!

11:45am Socially Leadable Tricks:

Spice up your dancing with a few new tricks you can lead on the social dance floor. Having a few “sensational rollercoaster” moves in your repertoire can help you lengthen your dance card. Ben and Sheri are known for their silly (and sexy) dance floor antics, and they’ll give you a no-holds-barred look at some of the tricks that have made them famous. No partner required!

Since his first visit to Carlisle in 2002, Andrew has been traveling the globe as a full-time international lindy hop instructor. His regular teaching gigs include stops in Australia, England, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Russia, Scotland, Sweden, and Switzerland. But despite his worldly ways, he returns to our small community every year to share his international knowledge of swing. This year’s schedule is as follows:
Saturday, November 3, 2007

10:00 - 10:15am: Warm Up Games

10:15 - 11:30am: Layers of Leading
In any one move, there are many different leads going on, for instance… the first half of the swing out has a directional lead, a rotational lead, height of the body, amount of counterbalance, amount of tension, plus timing and speed of all of the above. Each of these leads is a “layer” of the move. Sometimes all of these layers are led by the lead, sometimes a few of them come from the follow, sometimes many of them aren’t even led, and many times the lead and follow are ignoring some of the layers. The goal of this class is to discover the many different layers, recognize which layers are being led by the lead or the follow and then learn how to best dance within that layer.

11:45 - 1:00pm: The Fun & Unordinary
This class will include a bunch of movements you can fit in your dancing at any moment to vary things up and keep it fun! Expect a lot of tips for both the leads and the follows during this class.

1:00 - 2:30pm: Lunch

2:30 - 3:45pm: Making your night out dancing AMAZING!
Sometimes you go out dancing and the energy in the room is amazing! Other nights at the same venue, with the same people, and the same music, sometimes it is just NOT amazing at all. This class will teach you the things that can make your night (and many other people’s nights) change from not so great to “Wow, that was one heck of a night!”

4:00 - 5:15pm: Dancing Like Superman - The Art of Dancing Fast
Dancing fast and making it feel comfortable should feel like Superman flying 100 miles an hour but seeing the bullet (your partner) going at a walking speed. In this class you’ll learn to make it feel like you are going at a walking speed when you are really flying.

Sunday, November 4, 2007

12am - 6pm Just Dance Intensive Workshop
All partner dances are a combination of moving your own body to interpret the music and being able to pass on your interpretations to your partner. Each dancer chooses to emphasize certain parts of the music and uses specific techniques to pass on that interpretation to a partner. Regardless of the social dance you choose to lead, all of these dances rely on fundamental concepts that don’t change. During the Sunday intensive workshop, Andrew will use these fundamental concepts to show you how to have amazing dances with all styles and levels of dancers in any dance. From Savoy Style to Hollywood Style, from Funk to Tango, from Blues to Balboa, from Beginner to Advanced Dancer, these are some of the concepts you need to know to become great in any dance as quickly as possible.  Students will particularly focus on some of the following concepts:

Being Grounded and Showing it - Have you heard about being grounded? Do you know how to describe it, explain it, or check to see if you are doing it or not? If you are doing it, are you showing your partner this grounding and do you know how to tell if you are showing your partner this? Can you get your partner to be more grounded? By the end of this intensive session, you should be able to answer a definitive YES to all of these questions.

Body Control - Balance is what gives us control over our body so we can interpret the music how we want to. We all have areas in our dancing where we lose our balance and it is not always easy to know where or how we started to go wrong. By the end of this six hour session, you will work on mastering some stylish moves that will test your balance and give you techniques to learn to keep your balance during all your movements.

Finding Your Own Musicality - Students will also work on understanding some simple ideas on how to interpret the music in your own way, based off of movements you can already do and listening to the energy in the music.

Follower Power - Follows can have a dramatic impact on the dance and can really help the leads with their creativity, musicality, connection, and more. Followers will learnhow to do this in a way that doesn’t have to distract the lead while showing leads how to react and take the follows ideas and make them work for them.

Games for Dancers - Throughout the session, Andrew will introduce some games to play during the dance night to keep things fresh and help people interact with each other more.
